Safety is at the heart of the Maclaren ethos. It has shaped our culture and our practices. Maclaren has zero tolerance for anything that compromises safety. This policy is central to our product design, development, manufacture and service. It is this practice that also makes us the highest quality manufacturer.
Around the world, we find numerous differing national and regional standards as prescribed by regulation or industry. To ensure we deliver to the highest levels, Maclaren has developed its own standards that surpass any other at large. These are known as Maclaren Gold Standards. They are benchmarks of quality and they are part of Maclaren Standards of Excellence that govern all aspects of our work including after sales customer service.
These, we always strive to satisfy. We strive to be the best and to make sure that our customers are always receiving the highest and best service and quality that they are entitled to – those that surpass any industry or regulatory requirements.
Maclaren believes that a stroller is a vehicle, just like a car. We consider it a vehicle simply by virtue of the fact that its primary use is on the streets. For safety, this means that there is a risk of accident beyond control of the parent or caregiver (just like any other type of car accident). It also means that there should be proper care by the parent or caregiver (just like any driver).
Consequently, for Maclaren, stroller structural integrity and frame strength is the overriding element of the equation of safety. This means Maclaren is concerned about catastrophic incidents, as rare and as unimaginable as they may be, no less or no different to road accidents where the type of car or the structure of the car would bear on the outcome. The same also applies to operator care and operator compliance with instructions just like with any driver, e.g. the driver or passengers wearing their seatbelts.
We periodically receive accident reports involving cars on public roads. Our ultimate satisfaction is when we hear that our strollers helped save lives and prevent major injury to their precious occupants – our children.
The equation of safety does not come cheap. All of this is why the costs of manufacturing our strollers are higher than the selling price of most other brands sold in the market. For Maclaren, this unconditional commitment to safety, including 'in-use' safety, is reflected in its safety record and that is what puts Maclaren ahead of any other parenting brand anywhere in the world.
'In-Use' Safety is largely about safety beyond the control of the operator. It is less about environmental risk or human factor risks. On the other hand, human factor risks are also important and are always part of the equation of safety. It is all about determining the relevant elements as best as humanly possible. Strollers are mechanical multi-fold products with many parts activating during the operations of opening and closing them. Extreme care must be taken to follow instructions and to be mindful of the warnings. This is analogous to driving away whilst the car doors have not been properly shut or getting a hand caught in the door of a car.
But what can we do about a busy mom with bags of groceries, in a busy street with a restless child trying to jump into a stroller? It’s easy to forget the correct use of a product in these circumstances but what we can try to do is to highlight the risks to them and increase their awareness of those risks.
Maclaren has a shared responsibility with its customers. We’ll invest in the strongest frames and safest mechanisms while caregivers try to use these mechanical products as safely as possible.
'In-Use' risks constitute the vast majority of stroller related injuries. Maclaren prides itself in its impeccable record of ‘in-use’ safety and considers it an obligation to its customers to uphold such standards. This is what makes Maclaren the safest product in its class. That is why your comments matter to us and that is why we encourage hearing from you.
General Information on Causes and Types of Stroller related Injuries
Generally, stroller related injuries arise as a result of the following:
Falls - This category includes cases where the child fell out of a stroller, including: falls involving restraint problems**; falls while climbing into the stroller; falls while the stroller or a component was being lifted or carried; falls while in the process of being strapped into the stroller; and falls occurring after the occupant stood up.
[**Restraint problems include child slipping through the restraint; the child defeating the restraint; or the restraint coming loose]
Tipovers – This category includes injuries resulting from the stroller tipping over while the child was seated in it, and cases in which the child stood up.
Roll-offs– These were injuries resulting from a stroller with the child in it, rolling down steps or off a surface, such as a porch or a deck.
Pinched or Cut– This category relates to cases reported in which the child was injured in the mechanism of a stroller or was caught on an edge or point on the stroller, including fingertip lacerations and amputations.
Fell Against– This is where injury arises from falling against the stroller while outside of the stroller.
CPSC Facts about All U.S. Stroller Related Injuries:
In a recent one-year period, almost 15,000 children under age 5 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with strollers. Most of the injuries resulted from falls, and almost 90 percent of the fall injuries were to the head.
On average, about two children die each year from stroller-related incidents. Many of these deaths happen when children are left unattended to sleep in strollers reclined to the "carriage" position.

Safety Tips
Always read the operating instructions before use—don’t force the mechanisms—stop and check the instructions.
Never leave your child unattended in a buggy – even with the harness fastened.
Always use the safety harness.
Don't overload the buggy. Heavy items hanging from the handles can cause the buggy to topple over.
Don't let children play or climb on a buggy and don’t carry a second child on a buggy designed for one child.
Negotiate curbs carefully. Wherever possible always carry a buggy down flights of stairs.
Always apply the buggy brakes when stationary.
Keep the buggy clean: check brakes and wheels regularly.
Don’t fold the buggy whilst wet or store in a damp place. Always air cots after prolonged periods of use particularly if used for baby’s first bed.
At least every 12 months take your buggy to be serviced by an authorized Maclaren Service Agent.
